Hi! My name is Toni and this is my blog on writing prompts. Sometimes inspiration strikes me anywhere, sometimes I badly need a jumpstart. This blog helps with those jumpstarts, when you need a little push. Hopefully the writing prompts open your mind further to new ideas and help encourage you into writing more. A little writing help never hurt!

When are you most productive?

December 7th 2007 10:31
Got any ideas?

Can you tell what time of the day you are most eager to work and create? Schedule your writing time around that.

Sounds like common sense, but hey, we all need that gentle reminder every now and then.

It's easy to get sucked into a routine. Writing because you HAVE to and not because you WANT to sucks big time and invites a mental block easily.

So make time to write during the most productive parts of your day. If your best ideas come when you burn the midnight oil, during lunchtime, or come twilight, make sure nothing can bog down your creative juices during those moments.

Hi Toni

This is so true...I try to go with the flow of my body and when it most wants to write...it's so hard to get it to work if it isn't that time.

Great post

Hi Toni (waves at Tracy)

What you say is so true! I get inspired at the most inopportune of moments. Mostly I am at work, luckily I have scrap paper at hand and I can jot most of my thoughts down.

But like tonight i was at a BBQ and staring at some lights and a thoughts struck me - all of a sudden I wanted to go and sit at a computer and write, but i couldn`t .

To me inspiration can strike you at any time and you have to be prepared for it, even discreetly.

Then if I want to write and the environment suits me - there is no stopping me!

I'm definately most productive in the mornings but I certainly needed a gentle reminder as it's also the time I enjoy relaxing with a coffee. It's so easy to lose the most productive time of the day. I enjoyed your post.

The early hours of the morning (between 4.30 and 6) are definitely the centre of my universe.

I tend to function on about 4 hours sleep - habitual and not necessarily healthy I'm sure - but I love the solitude of that time of the day (or night) as it were.

It's also a time when you're unimpeded by the issues that the dawn will bring.

Interesting post.

Stay well.

Hi Toni,

The middle of the night is when I do best. I don't do anything well in the mornings. Including writing comments. So please excuse this one, as it is not yet 7am.

Tracy: Sometimes I want to go home early from work, but sometimes my ideas come in at 4.30 pm. ARGH! By the time I'm done writing my thoughts out at work, it's already dark. Tsk tsk.

Ash: That BBQ and lights moment you shared is so inspiring! What a visual. I can imagine the feeling of being there and feeling the urge to write. You are right, while there are moments when we KNOW we are most productive, there are also many times when inspiration just hits us.. and then we have to take advantage of this before that butterfly of an inspiration flies away.

Rose: Hmmm, true! We can't say we don't need that extra help to boost our productivity. To some it's a cup of coffee, to others a bite of chocolate. Mmmm! Thanks for the visit and do drop by again!

Mr Nice Guy: Wow, those are EARLY hours. It's fascinating how somewhere in the world, at whatever time, someone is up being productive while the rest of us get their shut-eye.

i hate the fact that i always always have inspiration to write when i'm lying in bed about to fall asleep. My mind and its creativity works doubletime ... Since High School i've been thinking about a "supercool gadget" that i wish someone would soon invent.. one that would type in things i'm thinking about hahaha

but seriously, a laptop or a pocket PC/Palm Top didn't help because i'd be too sleepy or tired to even look into the screen of one..

Raven: So how often does that happen?

Hazel: I love that gadget idea of yours! When you get around to inventing it, orh= having someone invent it for you, I'll be your first customer!
