What's your best friend story?

Here's mine.
MJ declared herself to be my best friend. I didn't even know we were good friends till she said, "We're best friends!" Okay then. I decided she would be my best friend.
I think it started because we sat next to each other a lot in class. We would always be alphabetically seated. Both our family names started with O, so that immediately bonded us.
I didn't even know what best friends were supposed to do. I guess it meant doing a lot of things together, like being the first to answer each other's slum books, or being the first one you pick in P.E. class.
The concept of "best friends" was so foreign to me. I was used to having several playmates. But to have one constant one? I didn't know what to do!
MJ figured out my confusion soon enough. It was in Science class. Gretel was telling me how most of them who rode the school bus hated MJ. Gretel said she was bossy, mean, and a huge bully. I didn't know what to say. So I just nodded and kept quiet.
MJ saw all this of course and glared at me. I have never forgotten that glare. It was a glare of hurt and betrayal, and since then she stopped talking to me.
That was when I knew best friends were supposed to defend each other. It was too late though.
I never got to apologize. That abandoned friendship with MJ was a lesson in Best Friends 101 for me, even if I never really counted us to be best friends. While I thought it was just a label, it apparently meant much more to MJ. I just wished I had learned much earlier what best friends were really about, so I could have nurtured that friendship with MJ.
And so I became best friends with Gretel instead.
(If you're MJ and you're reading this, I'm sorry. I'm really sorry.)
