Silver Teeth at 35
September 30th 2009 05:33
Twenty years earlier
"You can't get braces. They're too expensive."
"It's not covered by dental."
Michelle sat in the living room, not able to convince her parents that she really needed braces. "My teeth are so crooked! They're WEIRD!"
"The dentist said your teeth are FINE."
"You just want to wear braces because all your friends have them."
Michelle rolled her eyes. There was truth to what her parents said. All her friends wore braces. All of them wore blue elastics too. But she knew she wouldn't win this argument.
Twenty years later
"Your teeth are getting too crowded."
"Would you like to wear braces?
Michelle couldn't believe her ears. She was pushing 35 and she needed braces? "Could this have been avoided if I wore braces when I was a kid?"
"Yes."
"Yes."
Michelle rolled her eyes. Both dentists she asked encouraged her to wear braces. She always knew she had crooked teeth. And now she was paying for it. All her friends had perfect smiles now. And she was wearing braces? She knew she wouldn't win this argument. She had to wear braces. And she hated her parents.
High school never ends.
