Hector gazed at her with melancholy. While he had expected this, he had no idea how much it would hurt.

Hector and his wife are both in their twilight years. While Hector's memory remains sharp, Nena has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Though never apart since they got married some forty years ago, these days Nena seems detached.

Hector is looking at his bank account online and he realizes that he needs to get a job and get his act together otherwise he won't be looking at the same sum of money next time he logs on.

Hector has been acting aloof and distant around his girlfriend for some time. Finally, they had the "talk". The girl said that to him, and though he expected this confrontation of sorts, he didn't realize he would be affected.
