Hi! My name is Toni and this is my blog on writing prompts. Sometimes inspiration strikes me anywhere, sometimes I badly need a jumpstart. This blog helps with those jumpstarts, when you need a little push. Hopefully the writing prompts open your mind further to new ideas and help encourage you into writing more. A little writing help never hurt!

My Day Job Versus My Passion

February 28th 2008 10:10
What's your title?

Piper looked at her newly acquired business card. It had her name in a clean business-like font, with the words "Regional Sales Manager" right beneath it. She just got promoted. She has celebrated. She has chosen a new carpet for her new office. She just got the keys to her new car.

But something bugged her about this business card.

She got a black marker, crossed out her new position and scribbled on her card. After a few seconds, she grinned, placed her scribbled on card in her pocket, and stepped out of the room with a spring in her step.

On her office desk sat stacks of her new business cards. But in her pocket was a card with the her name and a hastily scrawled "Cartoonist Extraordinaire."

While Piper knew she was a manager by profession, she felt she was an artist at heart.

*****

Do you wish your business card said something else about you?

Short answer - yes.

I think I'm nearly the same as 'Piper' - except I can't draw.

Very Rich and Famous, Commercially Successful and Critically Acclaimed. That's all. No actual 'job'. Lol.

Michaelie: Ah, got that! I'd want that on my business card too! *L*

My title on my business card is so long, even I can't remember it. (I didn't choose it... the company did).

Software Quality Assurance Analyst / Test Engineer.
SQAATE. I squat (SQAATE) on my ass all day long, LOL.

I'd like it to say, "Change Evangelist", hehe.

FruitOaty: *L* SQAATE sounds interesting! Change Evangelist more inspiring though!

Personally I like the idea of a blank business card with just my name on it.

Eyecatching and a little outside the square, prompts the recipient to ask what is it you do exactly while at the same time (in your own surreal mind at least) gives you a sense of free spirit to say whatever it is you feel (or would like to appear on it at that particular nano second of your life).

Besides - 'pole dancer' probably doesn't look particularly good in a business situation

I'm currently hating the title on my business card right now and I would do anything to have "Traveller" there instead.

Hazel - me too!!!!

I have two business cards. One from my day job, that says IT Specialist A/NZ Information Technology. (no, I can't fix your computer)

The other, which I made up with the printing company, says "Freelance Writer"

Amy - At least your other one has your passion in it I'd like to someday do that too. I used to write freelance but having a kid and a full time job somehow took a looot of my time

But I'm thinking of saying bye bye to a full time job at the moment

Hazel - I chose to stick to my full time job for now, I need it to pay rent Hey, why not try to be a travel consultant? That can be both a passion and full time!

MNG: Nice thought there! A blank business card with just your name on it does sound very appealing indeed. And it's so mysterious too. You can be whoever you wanna be depending on what your passionate about at the moment. Love it! And pole dancer? Uh... wow! *L*

Hazel: Travel writer would be great too! At least you're a traveller AND you get paid.

Ann: Very creative!

Amy: You'd make a fantastic freelance writer. A fabulous travel writer!!! And travel consultant? That's the first time I've heard of such work but it is very appealing indeed.

Peter Yang: Why thank you! What is your passion?

My passion...mmm...i don't know.

I got too many.

Do picking up girls count as one of them?

Can't really do that at work, can't I?

I've often thought I'd like to have a really glamorous business card that people would want me to autograph to give theirs an edge in e-bay charity auctions... but now that I re-think my position, I think business cards are overrated. I'd like my work to eventually speak for itself. People will compete to design my business card but my free spirit will never allow itself to be crammed into a box so small.

It would be kinda funny to have one that said "shit kicker" or "talks in movies" or "mrs. johnny depp understudy" though, just to see the look on people's faces...
