Cherish Me
November 8th 2007 14:32
I hesitated as the papers were placed before me. I had been waiting for this moment for more than 20 years. I had rehearsed it over and over. I would flip my hair, pick up my pen, quickly place my signature and walk out of the room. It was a film that was absolutely flawless. But it was all in my head.
It was real now. Eyes were on me. The pen slipped from my sweaty palm. Must I really do this?, I asked myself quietly. If I was able to bear it for 20 years, what's 20 more?
"Is there a problem, Ma'am?," I was asked.
I shook my head and smiled nervously. This is it. Just sign it and you're home free, a voice whispered. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
"I am ready," I whispered. I flipped my hair, picked up my pen, quickly signed the papers and walked out of the room.
In my head, I could hear shackles breaking and a door opening.
I was free.
Who was the narrator? What papers did she sign? In the end, she said she "was free." What did she mean by that? What's her story? What's your story?
