A Relationship with Pets
February 19th 2008 05:46
Write about your relationship with your favorite animal friend. Do you talk to them? Is there a comfort you get from your pets that you don't get from humans?
I've never really been a pet person. Maybe because my parents were not pet people, I never really felt I missed out on not having a pet. I do recall having pet fish, but I couldn't maintain having to clean the aquarium so often. I do enjoy playing with my cousin's Shih Tzu, but my knees go weak at the sight of my Uncle's German Shepherd.
Then there was the hermit crab named Kenneth. I had a huge sweet 16 party, and my best friend gave Kenneth to me as a gift. I think we partied too loud because the next day, Kenneth wouldn't come out of his shell anymore.
I tried with a little fluffy dog named Pom Pom, but before I could build up affection for her, she ran away.
So I've never really understood the bond between pets and humans. And that is why I ask you about it. Let me learn from you! It would be interesting to find out!

I am dotty about pets, especially dogs. I LOVE that pic, Yorkshire Terriers are one my fave breeds.
My husband and I have a little fluffer called Fergal who I've mentioned one or twice on my blog. Having a dog is great for getting my bum up and out for a good walk especially as I'm not working at the moment as I've been sick. He also makes me laugh a lot.
What a pity yours ran away, that's sad. Do you think you would get another one?
Okey dokes, here's a pic, I can't resist the opportunity:

Hats off and praise for the animal people. Well, ive had animals from world quality show horses, dogs, cats, fish, tropical birds, sheep, chickens, the list goes on.
As I sit typing this now, my dog, Tyson, is sleeping on the floor near my feet. Every animal is a true individual and boy, are they characters. It is for us to let them show it and be confident They are taken for granted way to much. But give them to good people who truly care and love, you will see any animal shine through much more than we mere humans ever could.
How they cannot speak, but their body language and gestures are all you need to know how they are feeling or what they want. It is a fact that dogs have over 200 more facial expressions than humans.
The best bit is, they really dont care, they dont think like us. They love you whether youre dressed to the nines or havent showered for 2 months..they dont care and only see you for how you treat them. It is a genuinely unconditional friendship.
Rock on

I've had a few pets \. Mostly dogs and cats (including a Guide Dog). Personally I'm more of a cat lover than for dogs but still....
We had an Abbysinnian called Xai Xai who passed away quite young (at age 4). She was a very special cat and I don't think she was like any other pet I'd ever had.
She would come when called. Loved to give nose rubs all the time (even at 2am in the morning). She would get lots of affection from the family but she was really a one person cat (she pretty much chose me). The really neat thing is she was very in tune with people's emotions so when I was feeling sad or down she'd always be there to give you a cuddle. Or make you laugh by chasing her tail or want to play fetch with her pet mouse (wo often ended up in the food bowl to be fed).
The last thing she did was climb the stairs (she was very weak at the time and my partner had to help her). Come to bed and lay on my stomach. I woke up with her dead on my chest 2 hours later and I don't think I could be consoled for about 5 days.
We've had cats since then but nothing quite the same....
I have to agree with the other poster though. It's probably one of the only "true" friendships you will ever have. They will love you unconditionally if you love and treat them well. They'll be there at your darkest of moments and still look at you with adoring and trusting eyes.

He's a cross Maltese/Shih Tzu. A lot of people ask if he has any poodle in him as his hair goes curly, I’ve no idea, all I know is he’s adorable!!
Glad you like him too

I was never a cat person but I felt sorry for this little cute fluffy thing. Unfortunately I could only save one of them, the rest were give to the RSPCA.
I guess as she was so little and vulnerable, my motherly instincts kicked in and before we knew it, Kitty and I have since become inseparable (unless I am travelling of course, in that case the poor thing is cared for by my sister).
I talk to her, I sing to her and she purrs all over me. She is three now, and thinks she is human.
I am completely turned. I am now a cat person

Then my cousin gave me a Golden Retriever - golden brown. Named her Meg. a year after he gave us another one, this time yellow in color. Named him Sam.
They've been together for about 5 years when last year before Christmas Sam caught a virus -- Distemper. He died about a month later. Saddened all of us in the house. But we're all glad that dear old Meg remained strong and fought the virus. She's as healthy as can be!
there I babbled. obviously my relationship with my pet is almost like that with my son
