10 ways to get writing prompts
October 23rd 2007 02:44
1. Flip open a magazine, close your eyes and place your finger on a random spot. The word or picture it lands on shall be your writing prompt.
2. Take a walk. When you get back to your desk, start writing.
3. Sleep. Try to remember your dream upon waking up. Begin to write about your dream and see what flows.
4. People-watch. Observe. Write down things they wear that interest you. See where you go from there.
5. Get a piece of construction paper. Grab a pair of scissors. Cut out paperdolls. You know how to do that right? The ones where the dolls come out holding each other hand in hand? When that's done, jazz up each doll with features and accessories. Use only a pen. Then create a story out of it.
6. Get a bowl of peeled grapes. Place it in front of you. Blindfold yourself. Feel the grapes in your hands. Use your every sense. Remember each detail.
7. Flip open a phone directory. Go to the letter M. Run your eyes over the many names till one catches your attention. Write a fictional story inspired by that person's name.
8. Do nothing. Sometimes the more you force something into your life, the less likely it will come your way. So just daydream, think of something else, take a nap, take a bubble bath and try not to think about writing. When you're fully rejuvenated or relaxed, then write. You deserve a break once in awhile.
9. Go to a museum. Look at online galleries. Pick a painting that fascinates you. Stare into it. Write down what emotions it triggers from you. Create a scenario that makes the painting come even more alive.

I posted a writing prompt every day last year, that was fun and it made me write a lot, too.
